THE HANGOVER (2009) Weekly Pick + Review

The Hangover (2009) PosterThe Hangover (2009)

Will Ferrell or a Hangover? Tough one. Will was funny at some point, might be again, and a hangover can be gruesome. Well, this weekend, the hangover wins. This is no Tom Hankish Bachelor Party hangover, this is a Danny Boyle Trainspotting channeled thru Guy Ritchie RocknRolla hangover with no desire or need to hold back for audiences of today.

Comedy is not pretty. Steve Martin said it in 1979 and it's grown into an uglier version of itself every year thereafter. Yes, comedy is not pretty, but there are limits right? Or are there? When is comedy really horrific drama in disguise?

UP (2009) Weekly Pick + Review

UP (2009) PosterUp (2009)

Up is Pixar's 10th outing. 10 times at bat, and where do they go? Up. Up to, or over to, Cannes No. 62, where it will be the first Pixar film to ever open the festival. And Up the audiences went, followed by waves of ovation.

Carl Fredricksen is an elderly man (who in the past was a seller of balloons) who all his life had dreamed of traveling the world, but, like all of us, had to struggle with problems of daily life such as bills. Now 72 years-old, life does not seem to have much more time for him to realize his dreams.

TERMINATOR SALVATION (2009) Weekly Pick + Review

TERMINATOR SALVATION (2009) PosterTerminator Salvation (2009)

While the real Terminator needs salvation in California, this sequel will scare the recession out of ya. Terminator, a high-concept so good, it eats it's own young. "I am human" - Marcus Wright. Yes. Yes, you are.

ANGELS & DEMONS (2009) Weekly Pick + Review

ANGELS & DEMONS (2009) PosterAngels & Demons (2009)

Yin & Yang, Dogs & Cats, Husband & Wife...yeah we get it...polar opposites. Just like Banks and People.

Imagine a world where history actually happened. Long forgotten documents were real and foibles of past beliefs are recounted with heartfelt fear of impending deja vu. Imagine Entertainment, and you've imagined Angels & Demons.

STAR TREK (2009) Weekly Pick + Review

Star Trek (2009) PosterStar Trek (2009)

No contest this week. Goofy, almost unwatchable 60s series grows up and gets the Lost / Alias treatment. Kirk as a young man, Spock as a young Vulcan, blah blah blah. Bruce Greenwood gets to come out of the indie world and Winona Ryder gets another post-spree chance. Jennifer Morrison (House) gets to play Momma Kirk.
